This is HB Maverick and we are going to visit the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, Arizona. The garden consists of 140 acres of land and over 50,000 desert cacti, flowers, plants, and trees.
Let’s Go!
Desert Botanical Garden
The garden was established in 1939 by the Arizona Cactus and Native Flora Society. One third of the plants are native to the Sonoran Desert which includes large portions of Arizona and Mexico. The other plants come from the remaining four deserts of North America – the Mojave, Great Basin, and Chihuahuan Deserts.
Desert Flowers
Arizona had gotten a lot of winter rains and the desert flowers were out in force! We walked through the different sections and were amazed by the wide variety of flowers and plants.
Butterfly Garden
What garden would not be complete without a butterfly enclosure and this garden had a structure with many different types of butterflies fluttering about. The structure had double doors so the butterflies would not inadvertently fly away.
People of the Early Days in the Sonoran Desert
One section of the garden is dedicated to displaying how the early Native Americans of the region lived. These included the `Tohono O’odham, Western Apache and Hispanic peoples. These early settlers had irrigation systems built and grew many different types of grains and vegetables.
Conclusion
This was a great day adventure in the Phoenix area with the ability to see the wonders of the desert plants up close and learn about them. It was a day well-spent!
