This is my first Vlog style video where I bring you along with me to show you the process I go through when going out on a photography shoot for myself. It’s a bit haphazard and you don’t always get the perfect conditions, but with a little bit of trial and error, you can get some fantastic photos with dunes, rocky outcrops and that beautiful morning light. Which area is this? Would you share a dropped pin?

  • Nice video as always. I have some beginner's questions: Why didn't you shoot at f22? Could you recommend a sturdy tripod for windy conditions?

  • Jim Bass 2 weeks ago

I really like the image at 9:45. Planning a trip to Death Valley soon and look forward to shooting the dunes.

Interesting. You sound a bit horse today, you sick? Sand dune photography looks tough.

    Excellent video!
Do you have any videos on photo stacking?

Thank you for this real life workshop!

Haha love the outakes. I take it you didnt deflate. Just buy an airpump from dragon mart (wear mask). Glad Bex is in the video. She needs to be more prominent. Re: the video…Normady beach landing was one of the best planned assault and it still didn't go off smoothly. Another great video….let me know when you are going again…ill try notnto tear up the dunes. Haha

Wouldn't you normally use stacking for those kinds of images, or do you find that f11 works fine? I like that you included your lovely wife for a small bit anyway!

On location photo vlogs are always fun to watch…and learn from.. hope there’s more to come.

    Nice shots Mike….

One more point, photography isn't always about getting the shot you had in mind. Being able to adjust and get the best photo possible is a valuable skill.

  • Roger Huston 2 weeks ago

Of course every photographer has to deal with changing conditions, but few of us have the actual landscape be one of the things that change.

Mike great job, I love seeing you get out and about in Dubai. It certainly is one of the most interesting cities we have on the planet.

Persistence is key to good photography. Everyone enjoys that perfect photo, but this video shows that they don't happen by accident. You have to put yourself in position to be ready to take it!

I really enjoyed following you along on an early morning shoot. I am sorry that you did not get the photo that you wanted, but glad to see that I am not alone in less than perfect photo excursions. I would like to see more of this format. Keep it up, brother.

Why don't you leave the car and walk to that place? Is it too much distance?

    Interesting to watch…

Hi Mike and Chris, just wanted to say thanks for another great video. Growing up in the desert myself (Coachella Valley), these images really speak to me. Keep up the great work 🙂

Will swap you some of the clouds here in the UK that seem to have been here for months for some of your blue sky!

Great work again guys. Love the variety in those shots.

Being Arizona photographers, do you guys see tons of rattlesnakes out there on your adventures? Or are they more rare than one would think?

Beautiful work, Mike. Planning a road trip to the Sonoran desert early in the spring…the lockdowns are wearing on me and need a break from work. Do you recommend any particular area for chollas and saguaros?

    Absolutely gorgeous pictures!

Really liked the photos from this one. Nice job guys. I think the thing that caught my attention the most was Chris’ idea to wait for the sun to provide separation on those two sets of background hills. Pretty clever. And that is a proper coffee maker.

At least Arizona makes up for the lack of clouds with some gorgeous colors. Great video and photographs. And the outtakes at the end were a pleasant surprise. Peace and Safe Travels.
