These all great and good ideas. Problem is that after about 2 years of use
the buckets will degrade from weather and sun enough to break and crack.
The all that effort is wasted. Maybe use something that won’t degrade this
    way from uv rays?

  • LDSPrepper 3 years ago

@Yesquiet Absolutely, just like my wife is supporting her tomato plants
grown in her raised garden beds. The standard tomato cage will work
    perfectly with the buckets.

  • ngot74 3 years ago

What I don’t get is that this guy’s yard has plenty of acrage but he plants
    his veggies in containers?

  • NWOIS666 3 years ago

    Looks good Richard!!

  • snobahr 3 years ago

If somebody wants to grow organic, there might be content issues with one’s
yard soil. Some people have heavy gopher/mole issues, which a raised bed
like this guy has will circumvent.

  • Ronald Johnston 3 years ago

I use the same two bucket system, but use different soil. I purchase
alfalfa bales and cut it up with my lawn mower. I buy patio plus from
Kelloggs it has worm casting, bat poo, chicken manure and kelp. I put all
this in my concrete mixer. I get three buckets from 1 bag of patio plus and
alfalfa cuttings. I use the same formula in the ground. I use gypsum for
    the calcium sulfate.

  • weetreebonsai 3 years ago

Have you considered doing one like LarryLHall?

  • Sheila6325 . 3 years ago

He did a wonderful job. Sure makes gardening easier.

  • docatomics 3 years ago

…remove the plastic as the roots must breath or they shall not grow very
large and will become diseased as will the stem and then the tomatoe leaves.

  • imasurvivornthriver 3 years ago

    Very nice.

  • Steve N Vegas 3 years ago

    very nice

  • kookingkorner 3 years ago

i soo want to do this i just cant get buckets.. tho i keep trying..

  • LDSPrepper 3 years ago

One great thing about this system is it can be elevated so if you are in
your 70’s like Richard is you don’t have to bend over so much to tend your
garden and you don’t have to do back breaking work to clear a garden bed or
build a raised garden. This solution made it possible for him to garden
    again.

  • LDSPrepper 3 years ago

@BlueCherryFae Great idea about reusing compost bags. Richard hasn’t used
up all the peat moss and perlite yet but when he does using the bags as
    covers is a great idea.

  • Valentine Tesla 3 years ago

i live in France and i’ll try your technic, I give as fertilizer of the
stinging nettle to my vegetables and you put what as fertilizer?

  • LDSPrepper 3 years ago

Sounds like a great mix. A lot of work but a great mix. I’m guessing you
are getting good results too. Good job.

  • Yesquiet 3 years ago

Your system seems good LDSPrepper……After they grow … Won’t you have
to support the tomato plants with some kind of cage or stakes .. ? …
..thanks for another nice , very informative set of videos for container
    garden watering

  • Rocket11213 3 years ago

I live in NJ and like to try growing a Big Boy 10 in tomatoes plant in a 5
gallon pail. Since it is 4/18 I will call the local plant nursery if they
have the plants in, Night temp staying at 40 and day time around 60 to mid
70s,and getting warmer. So 5 gal pail drill holes in bottom and put res
water tray on the bottom. Then stones in pain 2 in and then Miracle grow
soil for tomatoes. then the plant and a cage. What type water fertilizer
should use over time? any suggestions, I like lg juicy ones.

  • stymye 3 years ago

@LDSPrepper excellent I thought so but couldn’t remember ,I like the
    watering system !

  • Drew Grow 3 years ago

Great vacation idea so you dont lose any plants. And I guess if you are
planning to be away a while use a big container to hold the water

  • JosephDrakeable 3 years ago

This item is a great find! It certainly comes in handy for most routine
gardening chores. I definitely recommend it here is the link to it in case
    anyone is interested: amzn.to12Zk0m6

  • jahad222 3 years ago

No you don’t plant more potatoes. As you cover them each time, they form
roots on the stems, which form more potatoes as they grow taller and
taller. Mulching all the way and watering. The plant likes FULL sun. Once
picked the potato does not. And you need to store them in a cool “dark”
location once harvested. Once the top of the plant dies and turns brown,
the pot. are ready! (under the soil) Hope this helps.

  • LuvTheSnapper 3 years ago

So how do you get spuds to grow up the tower? Be part of the solution, not
    the problem……

  • Konoyaro Bakayaro 3 years ago

I nominate you for this years Accidental Epic Win Award.

  • zachery andersen 3 years ago

So do potatoes grow all the way up, basically forming columns of potatoes?

  • earthworkr2 3 years ago

    your right! hahah

  • realflattom 3 years ago

You sound like you have an interesting life.

  • OutlawMCC 3 years ago

Great Video mate, but I also wanted to see the results and benefits for
    growing like this

  • JonFrumTheFirst 3 years ago

Try an indeterminate variety. Think late-season.

  • Vilibrato 3 years ago

No! There is a reason containers are called containers. They need to
contain the roots! Try to pop out one of your potted plants that has grown
roots to the edges of the pot, and see what happens.

  • MsMearl 3 years ago

Good job but I didn’t like the noise in the video

  • JonFrumTheFirst 3 years ago

That’s what’s SUPPOSED to happen. Few people succeed. And even those who
succeed don’t seem to know why they succeed.

  • tappakeggaday1 3 years ago

I think the five dislikes were because he could take the time to make a
cage for potatoes but couldn’t spend a couple of bucks on nails to fix that
    fence.

  • greenfingers gardener 3 years ago

growing potatoes in a cage is a very bad idea. and you should know this.
any potatoes that come in contact with the sun will turn green and become
poisonous they need to be grown in a large pot or ground, where the sun
light wont get to them. so its a thumbs down from me………………..

  • pelonbombero 3 years ago

how do you think straw mulch will do? or oak leaf mulch…. i think ill try
    both!

  • StatenIslandSlim 3 years ago

Why post a how do without ever showing the results HMMMM

  • alan30189 3 years ago

You didn’t show the harvest results. How did it work out for you?

  • Sidney Boudro 3 years ago

At least tell us. How was the harvest?

  • LuvTheSnapper 3 years ago

    Thanks. Now we’re getting somewhere.

  • DJMovit 3 years ago

    Stakes and Potatoes…funny

  • Gerald C 3 years ago

in a cage will work but may need black plastic on sides, maybe covering the
plants each time they break thr mulch would be better than waiting for
bigger plants. I have found each time plant is cover vertically more
potatoes are put on. need lots of fertilizer, water maybe a few small water
containers placed when adding mulch could hold water available longer. Be
sure to cut the seed potato with about 2 oz.of “meat” with eyes to plant.
yes whole potatoes will come up but why loss more seed ??

  • barrybedwetter 3 years ago

    Hill yer taters

  • truthgha 3 years ago

When do I harvest them? Also, my potatoes have already started and are
about 2 ft tall. Is it too late to do this? Thanks

  • JonFrumTheFirst 3 years ago

I’m guessing that he got a few spuds at the bottom around the seed
potatoes, and nothing more. This is the second potato video in a row I’ve
looked at with no harvest. Any fool can BUILD a potato tower – the question
is, can you get spuds up the inside of the tower, and not just at the
bottom? YouTube is full of potato tower failures. Hint: there are
determinate and indeterminate potato varieties, just like tomatoes.

  • Diana Reiss 3 years ago

I agree, nice idea, but they are meant to grow in the ground. Use same
technic of covering with lite mixture of leaf compost, but make a furrowed
trench and just continue to hill upward…same technic as used with leeks
and celery. Also, no need to plant whole potatoes, use the eyes in
sections, leaving a chuck of potato with the eye.

  • darkbluesoul 3 years ago

I have seen a few successful harvests of this method in my community
garden. I think that a major difference is whether or not you cover the
plants with soil or mulch- all the successful harvests I saw were done with
mulch. The ones I saw do well were using redwood mulch as we were in
northern california but it can work. They also were grown in basket style
towers like this, not enclosed boxes or buckets. Hope this helps!
