HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT EL PASO. ### NASA HAS AWARDED UTEP MILLION TO DEVELOP THE NEXT GENERATION OF ROCKET ENGINES USING LIQUID METHANE. THE METHANE-BASED ROCKET TECHNOLOGY WOULD BE USED FOR IN-SPACE PROPULSION AND ASCENT AND DESCENT ENGINES FOR MARS AND LUNAR LANDERS. THE RESEARCH WILL BE LED BY UTEP’S NASA-FUNDED CENTER FOR SPACE EXPLORATION TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH, WHICH IS DIRECTED BY DOCTOR AHSAN CHOUDHURI. THE TOTAL PROJECT COST IS .3 MILLION. IT INCLUDES INDUSTRY AND INSTITUTIONAL COMMITMENTS OF .3 MILLION TO CONTINUE TO BUILD AN ENDURING AEROSPACE RESEARCH CAPACITY AT UTEP. ### UTEP’S NEWEST PUBLIC ART PIECE, THE “MILLENNIUM MARKER” WAS OFFICIALLY DEDICATED TO THE UNIVERSITY THIS WEEK. RETIRED UTEP ART PROFESSOR WILLIE RAY PARISH CREATED THE STEEL SCULPTURE AND GAVE IT TO THE UNIVERSITY AS A GIFT FOR ITS CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION. “MILLENNIUM MARKER” IS A BLUE AND WHITE SCULPTURE WITH WINGS THAT MOVE IN THE BREEZE. THE PUBLIC ART PIECE WAS INSTALLED IN MARCH 2015. ### THE FINISHING TOUCHES ARE BEING PUT ON THE “ENGENDERING COMMUNITY” EXHIBIT THAT CHRONICLES THE HISTORY OF THE REGION’S LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL, TRANSEXUAL AND QUEER COMMUNITY. UTEP’S WOMEN’S AND GENDER STUDIES PROGRAM, AS WELL AS THE CENTENNIAL MUSEUM AND CHIHUAHUAN DESERT GARDENS, WILL PRESENT THE EXHIBIT AND HOST A PUBLIC OPENING RECEPTION FROM 6 TO 8 P.M. Tuesday, JUNE 2 AT THE MUSEUM. THE EXHIBIT WAS FUNDED, IN PART, BY A GRANT FROM HUMANITIES TEXAS, THE STATE AFFILIATE OF THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES. “ENGENDERING COMMUNITY” REVEALS THE CHALLENGES AND AREAS OF RESILIENCE FOR THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY IN THE EL PASO/JUAREZ BORDERLAND. ### COLLABORATIONS BETWEEN STUDENTS AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS WERE CELEBRATED DURING THE SECOND ANNUAL COMMUNITY […]
