June 2020-Greg Starr "Agave landscape"

In this rearranged presentation, Greg Starr will introduce some basic knowledge about agave, and then introduce some of the best landscape species in the southwestern United States. These species are grouped by size and arranged in alphabetical order in each group. Greg will show photos of plants in the habitat and plants in the landscape. He will discuss the general planting of each agave and the care of the agave and culture. Greg was born and raised in Tucson, Arizona, and grew up to love the desert and its flora and fauna. He graduated from the University of Arizona in 1979 with a bachelor of science degree in horticulture, then returned to the University of Arizona to study botany and further his education in horticulture. Greg went to Baja California, California with Dr. Ray Turner and Dr. Tony Burgess, the famous Sonoran desert botanist, for the first time in Mexico. During the trip, he was fascinated by agave, and then Dr. Howard Scott Gentry (Howard Scott Gentry) published a book about agave in the North American continent in 1982, which further exacerbated the atmosphere of confusion . Greg described five species and one subspecies of agave, and several classification projects are on vacation, while the coronavirus has shut down field work outside the United States. Greg released the first book “Cool Plants for Hot Gardens” at the end of April 2009. It is currently out of print, but he is currently revising and revising the book and hopes to complete it before next year. His second book is titled “Agave: Living Sculpture of Landscape and Vessel”, which was released in early May 2012. The publisher told him that there were less than 200 copies in the warehouse and they did not plan to republish the book. When Greg is no longer in the retail store, Greg keeps 50 copies. He is the co-author of “A Field Guide to Arizona Cacti and Other Succulents,” which will enter its third edition sometime this year. Greg spends most of his time typing on his computer, hoping that another book will take shape, preparing PowerPoint presentations, and tending to Starr Nursery, specializing in agave and related plants and his Can be shipped to other succulents across the country. .
