Sustainable Agriculture Design in the Desert Backyard: First Year Update

In March 2017, I installed this catchment landscape in my cousin’s backyard in Chandler, Arizona. You can watch the whole process in the desert backyard sustainable design video series on my chanel. I planted a few fruit trees and a vegetable garden for my nephews to experiment. This is the scenery after more than a year. Some things are done well, while others are not. There were some malfunctions in the irrigation timer, which caused some plants to be unable to accept water, which quickly led to the death of most things in the desert! This is a good example of the importance of regularly observing and interacting with your landscape, because it allows you to spot problems as early as possible. Overall, considering the difficult growing conditions in the Arizona desert, I think everything that gets water is done relatively well. The first summer is always the hardest for new transplants, and now they have passed that stage alive, they are ready for the second summer. Next time I go to Chandler, I will come back to see what’s going on in the yard. .
