Concerning Governor Newsom’s recent statement regarding the closure of indoor spaces in areas including Riverside County:

The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens has been diligent in following recommendations from the CDC and public health guidelines issued by state and local authorities. The indoor spaces have remained closed, and as such we are not currently affected by the changes Governor Newsom announced for Riverside County. These orders have been issued as a means of reducing the spread of COVID-19, and The Living Desert prioritizes the health and safety of the community, staff, and animals. Please review the policies on our health page at livingdesert.org/health for more information on what we are doing to keep the Zoo a safe space for all.

Australia is the driest inhabited continent in the world, with deserts receiving less than 10 inches of rainfall per year. Many similarities exist between Californian and Australian deserts, but the continent’s geographic isolation, long geologic history, and diverse climates result in sustaining a variety of animals that are unique to Australia.
